Post Fan Expo 2016, Concerns About the Special
on: September 1, 2016, 00:41

So, I just got an email telling me that I now have the special. It has 9 nine encounters detailed over fifty pages, and then another fifty-something dedicated to the bestiary. I don't know about the rest of the GMs for the special, but I can't prepare all of that in 2 days, especially when I'm scheduled to run a different game tomorrow night. So, what's the plan here? Do we each have to run all 9 encounters? Because I do not know how that's going to fit into 4 hours, especially if I'm supposed to be drawing all these maps. So, is there any way we could decide in advance which GMs are running which encounters? I've barely started reading it so I don't know how viable this is, but it would help a lot.

By the way, it seems worth mentioning that the blame for any frustration I may be feeling falls squarely on Paizo. I don't know what's worse, that they gave us 2 days to prep a complicated, 110 page scenario, or that I'm not even surprised that they could be so incompetent and inconsiderate.

Check your email Gabe. David sent us the Year of the Shadow Lodge two days ago. Still a tight prep but thankfully much less to read.

Ah crap, I forgot David had my other email address and didn't think to check it. Scenarios go through my usual address when I get them through paizo, so checking my gmail just didn't occur to me. Alright, forget that last post, I hope I didn't come across as too whiny or anything.

Seeing as I have very little time to prep this (at least partly my fault) and David wanted me to prep it for tiers 5-6 and 8-9, can anyone take the 8-9? I'll try to prep both unless I hear otherwise.

I'll take a look 8-9 for you since I'm also scheduled to handle 5-6. And no worries, a fair number of us have been complaining about how campaign management has been handling things.

Thanks. I just read it over, 5-6 isn't actually that different from the 8-9, so I'll focus on the 5-6 but it wouldn't be a big deal if I had to do the 8-9. There's at least one encounter that just has one more of the same monster. I should be ready, if not quite as prepared as I'd like to be. I do have a front desk shift right before the special, so hopefully I can multitask a bit and do some reading then too.

I'm still mad at Paizo, though.

Yeah, at U-Con in Detroit they sent the GMs the scenarios only 1 day in advance. Needless to say, without prep the experience definitely suffered. You're not alone. I wouldn't blame "Paizo" as a company, you can be much more specific, and you probably should send a complaint to someone who can do something about it. It's not cool.

I've thought of complaining but given the current state of things I'm not really sure who I would complain to. Tonya and John have noticeably had a very soft presence on the Paizo PFS forum in the past year. Given how recent campaign management decisions have been handled they've left the very strong impression that they don't want to directly interact with the community. Instead they seem to be handling things through public announcements and deferring matters to high ranking volunteers. I don't know what the situation is in Michigan but in Toronto the VC and RVC responsible for us are completely irrelevant since neither has an active role here. We could complain to David (our VL) but the crux of the organization issues we seem to be facing seems to be that he has an impossible time getting anyone higher up to acknowledge him in a timely fashion.

Even Tonya and John have bosses.

Their boss is pretty much just the CEO and maybe probably a couple other people, I don't know, I don't pay any more attention to Paizo than I have to to play PFS. Those people aren't really concerned with the organization of events I don't think, they're busy running a company, with all the responsibility that typically entails, and with creating content.

Anyway, I blame Paizo because they frequently demonstrate that the majority of them have little to no comprehension of the rules they're printing, their editing is terrible, and their ability to organize events is just as bad. I'm not saying they're bad at everything, they can write some interesting stuff, I'm just saying they're bad at a lot of things. The only reason I play Pathfinder is because it's so easy to find a game.

I'm not blaming all of Paizo for one thing, I'm blaming most of Paizo for doing most of the things that they do pretty badly.
