I've been reading through The Disappeared (scenario # 4-11) & I was wondering about the optional encounter.

*spoilers*

There's an optional encounter that's triggered by either going over the time limit or earning too many strikes. First a pair of guards show up, then 2 rounds later, 3 more guards arrive, then another 2 rounds later 4 more guards show up etc.

Is there supposed to be any way of surviving the optional encounter through fighting or would that lead to an inevitable tpk? The only options for survival I can see once the wave upon wave of guards start to arrive are: to flee by jumping through a nearby window (taking slashing & falling damage on the way) or surrendering & having all of your faction mission related stuff confiscated?

Pretty much. At that point, you flee, surrender, or are defeated. May not actually die since the guards presumably won't coup de grace you

It is a game mechanic to inform the players that they have failed their mission. However, if the group offers a creative solution to explain their absence, give them a chance. When I played it, my ninja split from the group on the way back to complete his faction mission. It happened that I arrived back in time and was able to convince the ambassador that the door was stuck until everyone else had returned and changed.
