Of the three main classes offered in this book (Ultimate Combat) I've only seen the Gunslinger being used.

Why are Samurai and Ninja so scarce? Are the classes weak by comparison?

Hey there.

I've seen tonnes of ninjas being used for PCs (none at 401 or DG though).

Ninjas are also one of the most used pregens I've seen as well. Please note that it seems ninjas die more than any other class I've ever seen as well. 🙂

I've seen pregen samurais but no PCs. I think the reason for this is that the Samurai has a strong eastern flavor and unless you're specifically looking for that kind of PC, you're not interested.

Also, the Samurai is not that powerful, you can make better builds with Fighters.

Those are my 2 cents on it.

Jason,

Thanks for that insight. I hadn't seen anyone using these classes at all! 🙂

I wonder what you (or any of our fellow players) might thing about a multiclass Samurai/Paladin. Worth while?

I don't know enough about the Samurai class to know whether it makes sense from a power gamer aspect, but from a roleplaying aspect I think people should always play something that makes them happy. There's really no wrong or right answer.

As far as powergaming goes, even levels of Order of the Star cavalier or samurai would help out the paladin's channelling ability, while keeping the same base attack bonus going. Multiclassing is friendlier to the cavalier, however; they're the only ones who are able to take the Horse Master feat.
