One of the new feats added in Animal Archive is Narrow Frame, which allows an animal companion to avoid the penalty to AC and attack rolls when squeezing into a space at least half its size.

I think this opens up the option of taking a Large Animal Companion into dungeons and using him effectively (vis-a-vis, my Paladin Axe Beak mount). Beaky would then be able to safely navigate 5ft corridors at half speed without a real penalty, though I am expecting he can't charge in that situation.

What do folks think? Would I be able to take him into underground spaces/dungeons? Bonus question: would I then be able to mount him in said dungeons?

Cheers and thanks for any opinions/table variance warnings 🙂

You want the Heel trick. With it and a Handle Animal check, your pet will follow you even into areas and situations it would not normally venture.

Narrow Frame doesn't help you get it to follow you, but it does remove the penalties when it does.

Do mounts get skill points?

@Adam, Great - I've taken the Combat Riding package (which gives Heel) and my Pally has points in Ride and Handle Animal @ +7.

@EricMcG, Paladin Mounts advance as Druid Animal Companions (treating the Paladin level as the Druid level), with the same abilities, etc. A 5 HD Animal Companion has 5 skill points as per the PRD: linkage.

While this will eliminate most of the problems involved in bringing a large animal into the dungeon it won't eliminate all of them

Sometimes one has to climb ladders, ropes, etc. Some GMs will disallow this for at least some animals.

There are also occassionally places where a medium character has to squeeze. Even with that feat, a GM will likely not allow a large character to fit.

If you're planning on bringing an animal inside on a regular basis I'd strongly recommend getting a potion or scroll of reduce animal. And rope. Together they'll solve almost all problems,

It is a VERY difficult Escape Artist check for a large creature to fit into a space where a medium creature needs to squeeze. You are typically looking at a DC 30, and certainly no attacking.

That said, look into oil of grease to make squeezing 10 points easier. It also stack with alchemical grease for a cumulative +15 bonus.
